Government vote against Sinn Fein’s Public Alcohol Bill amendments

The Government have overwhelmingly voted to reject Sinn Féin’s amendment to the Public Alcohol Bill that would see a ban on alcohol advertising online.

The amendment which was submitted by the party’s Health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly, was defeated after the Minister for Health Simon Harris declared that it was unfeasible to implement a ban.

It is believed that Sinn Féin wanted to impose restrictions that would prevent children from seeing alcohol products being advertised online.

The party proposed that restrictions be put in place on online alcohol advertising unless drinks companies could carry-out the appropriate steps that would prevent children from seeing their products.

However Deputy O’Reilly’s amendments proposals were ultimately defeated given that it would be highly difficult to impose such a ruling.

The overall amendment was defeated by 56 votes to 25, with 32 abstentions.
