Greek referendum: Early indications hint at a “No” win by a slight margin

The results for this historic referendum (the first one in almost four decades) have not yet been made official, but early estimations seem to point at a victory for the “No” side, which would mean that people may have rejected the new bailout terms imposed on them.

If this is officially confirmed, it could herald the end of Greece’s membership to the eurozone.

The issue of bailout terms has polarized the population, splitting it almost down the middle.

Banks in Greece have been closed for the last week, and monetary controls were introduced to prevent capital flight.

Official results will be released in the coming hours, but if the “No” victory has won, Greece and Europe will enter into a phase of uncertainty which may lead to social unrest within Greek borders.

A Greek exit from the eurozone will deliver a savage blow to the entire euro project. Started fifteen years ago, it was intended to be a solid and permanent financial solution across European territory. If a member state ends its membership, further unraveling may follow.
