Gardaí in Co Donegal say they are currently investigating a tragic case were a young couple have claimed their baby has died.
The news comes after Gardaí were alerted about the death of baby who was subsequently buried at graveyard in Annagry, a Gaeltacht village in the west of the county. It is understood that officers from Gardaí arrived at the cemetery at approximately 6am to exhume a coffin containing the remains of the infant who is thought to have died within the last 18 months, reports say the coffin was exhumed within a matter of hours only for the Gardaí to discover a plastic doll instead of a body in side the coffin.
Early reports suggest that the couple had claimed to locals that they had a baby, but later said the infant had tragically died. It is believed that a funeral service was held for the deceased infant in Annagry. However, according to reports a HSE official has been unable to find any record of the baby being born with the couple’s family name.
Gardaí have also said the case is currently being treated as “tragic” and that it will be very unlikely that charges will be brought against the young couple.
