We’ve all seen them in reality around the world, or on one of our favourite shows, but now it’s a reality in Ireland, SWAT-like Gardai will be patrolling Dublin Airport from now on.

In the aftermath of Brussels, the Western world is beginning to step up its response to the terror threat from the Islamic Extremist group, ISIS.

This is the first major public effort made by Irish authorities to combat a terror threat.

The armed Gardai will be visible to the public, and will start patrolling the airport’s two terminals armed with high calibre automatic assault machine guns. They will also be working with the current Airport Police.

Their aim is to combat any attempt made to detonate a bomb like that of the Brussels airport and metro tragedies.

The Regional Support Unit or RSU, as it’s been named, may also start to make an appearance at all sporting and music concerts in the capital, but a spokesperson said this is still in the works, the airport is the priority.
