Geldof to hand back his freedom of Dublin City award as part of San Suu Kyi protest

The former Boomtown Rats singer and human rights activist Bob Geldof has vowed to hand back his prestigious honour of the freedom of Dublin city today.

Geldof has reportedly decided to give back the honour in protest of nobel peace laureate San Suu Kyi who also holds the same award.

According to RTE News Geldof released a statement over the weekend in which he said he did not want to be associated with Kyi who has been heavily criticised for her country’s treatment of Rohingya Muslims in Burma.

Although Geldof who has also criticised Kyi in the past said he was a proud Dubliner, he did say he couldn’t continue to hold the award as long as Ms Kyi held it.

Geldof went onto say that Dublin was a great city and Kyi’s association with it shames us all given her disgusting treatment of the Rohingya people in Burma.

It is understood the former singer will attend City Hall later today to hand back his award.

Meanwhile Dublin City Council have yet respond to Geldof’s decision.
