Europe’s oldest woman celebrated her 116th birthday yesterday. Emma Morano is also the second oldest woman in the world. She marked the occasion by offering to sing her favourite song for visiting well-wishers at her home in Italy.
Ms Morano is one of only two women alive certified to have been born in the 19th Century. She celebrated in her one-bedroomed flat in Verbania, Piedmont.
Ms Morano attributes her longevity to eating three eggs a day for the last 90 years. At the age of 20, she was advised to eat two raw and one cooked egg every day to tackle her anaemia.
Susannah Mushatt Jones, a US woman, is the only other member of the 116 club. She attributes her longevity to many decades of living on her own. She was only married for five years between 1928 and 1933.
