Hope for residents in the North East as Irish Water discuss the possibility of re-opening water treatment plant that used to supply water to Drogheda

The people of Drogheda and its surrounding areas have been given some hope this morning after Irish water have confirmed that they are considering re-opening the Rosehall water treatment plant in order to ease the current crisis in the area.

Reports say chiefs at the company along with representatives from Louth County Council have held formal discussions about the possibility of re-opening the plant in a bid to provide much needed water supplies to nearly 200,000 people in the North East over the weekend.

It is understood that those who attended the private meeting agreed that the plant which only closed 18 months ago should be considered as viable option if repair works at the Staleen Water treatment plant prove to be unsuccessful over the coming days.

The call comes after Irish water revealed earlier this week that repair works have been halted on a number of occasions due to complications with old pipe work in the area.

A spokesperson for Irish Water has said all efforts are being put in place to repair the leak and they hope to have work completed by the weekend and they also hope to restore normal water supplies to all homes and businesses in the area.
