Householders could be hit with €260 fines as the Government look to introduce excessive use WATER CHARGES

The much hated water charges scheme could very well be back in some form or another if the Government push ahead with proposed plans.

According to The Irish Mirror newspaper, the Government are looking to introduce new a scheme that will see households being fined €260, if they go 20% the allocated fair usage policy.

The Mirror say, the Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy is set to submit plans before the Dail that would see households being hit with the fine if they go above what the government deems an average amount.

However the proposed new policy could affect some 80,000 homes as they house families of four people or above.

It is thought that the affected families would be unfairly hit with the charge given the amount of water they would use.

Although the plans have yet to be formalised, it is believed that a number of opposition parties have expressed concerns over the plans.

It is believed that Fianna Fáil are opposed to the idea as it could affect local and European elections, whilst other parties including Sinn Féin believe that the plan is the Government’s way of introducing the controversial charges.
