The leader of the Labour Party Brendan Howlin has said that the Government should seriously consider delaying refunding the water charges in order to improve the health care system.
Speaking over the weekend Mr Howlin who is also preparing for the next general election, said the state should hold off on paying the €178m in refunds until next year as the large sum of money could be spent on the failing health service now.
Although Mr Howlin agreed that all those who paid their charges must be refunded, he did claim the money could be put to better use in the short term.
The Labour leader said he fully believes no one could object to this as it is in the best interests of everyone.
He added that all available funds should be spent on public services in next month’s budget and that his party will be urging the Government to do so.
