The Irish Prison Service reported the seizing of a copious amount of illegal contraband at Mountjoy Prison yesterday.
Prison staff, aided by members of the Operational Support Group, conducted a thorough cell search, beginning at C-Wing at 7am. Common areas of the prison were also searched.
The probe was prompted by intelligence gathered by prison staff.
As a result of the search, a fair amount of contraband was found and confiscated. Among the items seized were 14 mobile phones, 6 SIM cards, assorted mobile phone chargers, cannabis resin, a diverse variety of tablets, about 60 litres of homemade alcohol, and heroin.
This is the largest haul of contraband made since a similar operation yielded 30 mobile phones and other items were seized at Portlaoise Prison last August.
