Hurricane Maria causes major damage in Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria has caused major damage around Puerto Rico, after the weather front made landfall near Yabucoa, on the southwest coast of the island earlier today.

Maria is whipping up winds of up to 235km/h, and is expected to dump at least 66cm of rain in some parts.

11,000 people are currently in shelters, and at least one person has been killed by storm-related causes.

The heavy rainfall may also pose a greater risk, as the island is prone to mudslides.

Maria is the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico since 1928.
