President Michael D Higgins has reportedly decided to seek another term in office.
The news of the President’s decision comes after it was widely expected that he may vacate the role at the end of his current term later this year.
Although President Higgins is yet to formally announce his decision, it is thought that he will seek another term after he received support from both political figures and the public in recent months.
The news of President Higgins’s impending announcement could very well see a number of candidates pull out of the race as they will not contest Mr Higgins in the upcoming election due to their support for Mr Higgins.
It is believed that President Higgins will formally announce his decision in July.
