“I’ll be a president for everyone”: President Higgins vows to represent everyone after securing a second term in office

The newly elected President of Ireland Michael D Higgins has said he will be a president for everyone, following his victory on Saturday.

President Higgins who said he is delighted and honoured to have been chosen by the people for second term in office, said the Irish people voted to choose which version of Irishness they wanted represented both at home and abroad.

In his speach President Higgins thanked his supporters for their support and vowed to represent not only them but everyone including those who didn’t vote for him.

President Higgins said: “The people have made a choice as to which version of Irishness they want reflected at home and abroad.”

“It is the making of hope they wish to share rather than the experience of any exploitation of division or fear.”

“My version of Ireland is one which draws on traditional genius and contemporary creativity.”

“The presidency belongs not only to any one person but to the people of Ireland.

“I will be a president for all the people, for those who voted for me and those who did not.

He addedb “I am so proud of our country, I am proud to be a president for all of you and with all of you, and I look forward with joy and hope to all that we will achieve together.”

President Higgins comments came after he was voted office for another seven years with 55.8% of the public vote.
