Investigation being carried out after a bomb found under a PSNI officer’s car in Derry.

The device was discovered early this morning after police in Derry were notified.

Suspicious activity had been noted at a house in Glenrandel, Eglinton at a about 2:45 this morning.

A couple, both serving as PSNI officers live at this home and were at home when the device was discovered.

It said that the explosive device had the potential to cause death or serious injury, up to fifteen houses were evacuated as the area was cordoned off.

Many important figures gave their opinion of this incident.

Northern Ireland Secretary, Theresa Villiers stated:

“I utterly condemn this cowardly terrorist attack on police officers who serve the whole community. Those responsible act in defiance of the wishes of the vast majority of people who want to see a peaceful and prosperous future for Northern Ireland”

Mark Lindsay the Chairman of the Police Federation for Northern Ireland gave an appeal for members of the public to assist in the appending of those responsible for the device.

Mark McEwan, the Local District Commander Superintendent stated that this was a “stark reminder” of the dangers that PSNI officers face every single day.

Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Fleming described the event as “wrong” and “futile”.

Anne Connolly, Policing Board Chair slated those responsible, saying that those involved as “having nothing to offer our society but destruction and threat, in contrast with the strong proactive work police officers carry out on our streets every day”

To facilitate those being evacuated the Foyle Arena opened.

The area is cordoned off and police are holding an extensive investigation.
