An investigation is underway after up to 50 million Facebook accounts have been targeted by hackers.
It’s understood a fault was found by the company’s engineering team in the social media website’s ‘view as’ code.
It’s not yet known precisely what happened but the code, which enables users to view their profile as someone else, apparently allowed would-be hackers to Access tokens.
In a brief statement Facebook said: Hackers could have accessed the tokens which are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook.
Facebook say the issue was uncovered on Tuesday 25 September and an investigation is underway with the assistance of the relevant law authorities.
