Ireland keep grand slam dream alive by beating Wales

Ireland have kept their grand slam hopes alive by beating Wales 37-27 in the Aviva Stadium this afternoon.

In a game that seen Ireland as favourites before kick off, the boys in green were pushed all the way as they managed to beat a dogged Welsh side who were more than determined to spoil the Irish winning streak.

Ireland who now head to Scotland in two weeks time, started slowly as a resolute Welsh side came to Dublin and quickly found their stride when Halfpenny slotted over to give the visitors an early lead.

However Joe Schmidt’s men managed to get into the game when Stockdale managed to score in the corner to give Ireland their try of the game, although Schmidt and Ireland would rue the inconsistency of Johnny Sexton’s boot as he managed to miss the subsequent conversion along with two penalties.

Wales who were looking to bounce back from their defeat to England a fortnight ago, regained the lead when Davies managed to crossover after some sloppy Irish defending, they even managed to go further ahead when Halfpenny added another penalty on the 31st minute.

Ireland did however did manage to go in 15-13 ahead at the break as Sexton added a penalty,  before Aki scored another try on the stroke of half time.

The second half seen Ireland fly out of the blocks as Leavy and Healy added to further tries to give the boys in green a well deserved bonus point.

However as the game seemed to be wrapped up, Ireland were made sweat as Shinglar and Evans scored two tries to reduce the deficit to just a single score.

With time running out Ireland managed to wrap up the win when Stockdale intercepted a Welsh pass to run clear a score a decisive try with seconds remaining.

Ireland now face Scotland in Dublin in two weeks time, before a potentially crucial decider in Twickenham against England on St Patrick’s Day.
