Ireland to accept a further 260 refugees from Lebanon next spring

According to reports this morning the Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald will submit a memo to the Dáil later today that will ask the Government to accept a further 260 refugees from Lebanon in 2017.

It is understood that Ms Fitzgerald will seek approval from her fellow colleagues that will see Ireland taking 260 refugees early next year.

If her request is approved the would bring Ireland’s total of refugees accepted in the past year to 780, following the 520 accepted earlier this year.

The move comes after Ms Fitzgerald announced in September 2015 that Ireland would accept up to 4,000 refugees as part of a co-ordinated European Union response to the crisis in the Mediterranean.
