Ireland to take in some of the 49 migrants stranded in the Mediterranean Sea after an agreement is reached

Ireland along with seven other EU countries have agreed to take in some of the 49 migrants who have been housed on two rescue ships in the Mediterranean Sea over the past few weeks.

In an announcement made this afternoon the Department of Justice and Equality confirmed that Ireland is willing to help Maltese authorities.

Although the Department refused to say how many migrants Ireland will be talking. But instead said negotiations are currently ongoing.

The migrants have come to the attentions of the world since December after they were refused entry to Malta, despite being picked up by two German rescue ships off the coast of Libya.

It is understood the agreement will now mean the two ships can disembark in Malta and those onboard will be given asylum in eight EU countries.
