Ireland’s capital may soon get a brand new landmark in the shape of a “floating hotel”.
The concept calls for a cruise liner to be permanently anchored at a pier in Dun Laoghaire harbour, providing around 100 double rooms.
The idea of a floating hotel is not new, and there are in fact many such facilities operating worldwide, but it would be the first time for Ireland.
Local officials at Dun Laoghaire are said to be seeking planning approval from An Bord Pleanala to begin preparation work to allow cruise ships to berth at the old ferry terminal at Saint Michael’s pier.
If the idea is fully developed, it is estimated that it would create between 70 and 250 jobs.
