Ireland’s population expected to grow to 5.3m over the next 45 years, according to new report

population

The Ageing Report just published by the European Commission states that life expectancy in Ireland will rise from 79 to 85 years for males by the year 2060, and from 83 to 89 years for females.

The same report states that the fertility rates are expected to decrease slightly, and the elderly population will become a much larger portion of the population, increasing from about 3% to almost 11%.

A direct consequence of this will be that expenditure on healthcare, long term care, and pensions, will significantly increase.
