Irish Cancer Society urge parents to get their daughters vaccinated against the HPV virus – saying most information regarding side effects are misleading and false

The Irish Cancer Society have urged parents of teenage girls to make sure they receive the HPV vaccine, and not to let misleading information to deter them from bringing their daughter to get vaccinated.

The warning comes after recent figures found that only 50% of parents allowed their daughter to receive the vaccine last year, compared to 87% in 2015.

The Irish Cancer Society say the dramatic fall in young girls not being vaccinated is a result of parents listening to misleading information about the side effects.

Speaking about the fall in vaccines being given, Dr. Brenda Corcoran from the National Immunisation Office, has said word must be spread that results have shown the vaccine is safe and effective.

Ms Corcoran said: “It is a challenge to all of us to counteract alternative facts which parents are reading and parents are believing.”

“Unfortunately they are not true. We have to be more involved in social media, we have to be more involved in ways that parents connect with each other to get the information out through whatever means.”
