The Irish Government have confirmed that they will accept five unaccompanied child migrants rescued from the Mediterranean Sea.
In an announcement the Minister for Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan confirmed that the five migrants will be given asylum as part of an agreement reached with Maltese authorities.
Mr Flanagan who confirmed the news late on Wednesday night said the children were through a rough ordeal and they would be placed under the Irish Refugee Protection Programme.
He also said the agreement was an act of solidarity and humanitarian assistance.
The news comes after eight countries agreed on Wednesday to take in 49 migrants who were rescued by two German rescue ships off the coast of Libya in December.
