Irish Navy vessel LÉ Samuel Beckett rescues 269 people during humanitarian mission in the Mediterranean

The crew of the Irish Navy vessel LÉ Samuel Beckett continued doing outstanding work today, after rescuing 269 people from the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

The vessel was responding to a call from Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre.

Upon reaching the rescue area, they located two inflatable craft, one of which appearing to be floundering.

269 people were rescued, and three others were sadly found dead.

In total, Irish vessels have rescued more than 10,000 people since May 2015.
