Irish public could soon face more charges to watch TV as RTE propose raising the current TV licence from €160 to €175 per year

The newly installed chief at RTE has called on the Government to consider increasing the price of the annual TV licence from €160 to €175.

The latest call by Dee Forbes which will surely see a public outcry comes as the company say the current revenues are not enough to cover the cost of production of current and future programmes.

According to RTE the slight increase of €15 per household would be beneficial as it would contribute to providing a stable future at the company and it would assist in developing programmes both in the present and in the future.

Ms Forbes also claims that the increase which would workout at an extra 47 cents per day which would cover the costs that are not currently being claimed from television providers such as SKY and Virgin Media who don’t pay to host RTE’s content on their platforms.

Although the proposals would have to be approved by the Department of Communications, the rise in fees will more than likely receive a backlash of criticism from the public who already feel they are paying too much for both the annual TV licence and subscription fees to private operators.

Latest figures suggest that on average Irish householders pay in the region of €90 to €120 per month for subscription services along with their current TV licence.
