The current hosepipe ban in the greater Dublin area could be extended to other counties Irish Water have revealed.

In an announcement, the state utility confirmed that the current ban in the Dublin region could be extended to counties if water levels continue to drop.

Irish Water say a similar ban which prohibits the public from using excessive amounts of water for non essential needs could be implemented in counties Laois, Kilkenny and Limerick, over the coming days.

It is understood the ban is being considered as water levels across the country continue to drop during the current heatwave.

Irish Water say they will continue to assess water supplies across the country over the coming days, but the company have warned that restrictions could be implemented for a number of weeks as water supplies will remain seriously low.
