According to the EU Commission, Ireland is breaking EU law if the government go ahead and scrap or even postpone water charges.

A statement released today says that the EU sets down strict conditions and Ireland must adhere to its EU overlords.

The statement says we’ll receive significant fines if the government don’t impose water charges on the people.
“On the contrary, in the said plans, Ireland made a clear commitment to set up water charges to comply with the provisions of Article 9(1).

“Ireland subsequently applied water charges and the Commission considers that the Directive does not provide for a situation whereby it can revert to any previous practice,” the Commission said.

It’s worth noting that no such statement or fine can now be applied to the United Kingdom since their Brexit means they can no have full control over their own water charges as a domestic policy only.
