Japanese authorities have confirmed that the country will resume commercial whaling in 2019.
Japan has formally announced that it will withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) early next year, thus opening the door for the continuation of whaling across territorial waters.
Commercial whaling was banned by the commission in 1986, but Japan continued to hunt whales due to a loophole in the legislation.
