Jon Venables, one of James Bulger’s killers, admits possession of indecent imagery involving children

Jon Venables, one of the infamous killers of toddler James Bulger, has admitted in court to the possession of over 1,000 images depicting child abuse.

Venables, who was granted lifelong anonymity after his release on licence in 2001, appeared via video link for his sentence hearing. He pleaded guilty to the charges put to him and received a 40-month sentence. Venables reportedly had a ‘pedophile manual’ in his possession also.

Both Venables and his then school friend Robert Thompson served eight years in prison in connection with the brutal killing of James Bulger in 1993.

Venables was released on licence in 2001, and has been in trouble multiple times since. This was the second time he was caught in possession of child abuse images.

A report on him said that Venables was a “high risk of real harm to children in the future” and has a “long-term and profound interest in children”.
