The Dáil have officially announced this afternoon that all those who paid their water charges in recent years will be refunded by the end of 2017.

According to reports the legislation was officially passed today after the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy presented a report before the cabinet which outlines details on the refund procedure.

The report states that 990,000 citizens who paid their water charges will automatically be refunded by cheque and there will be no need to submit any applications to Irish Water, accept only in the circumstances that their details have changed since the charges were scrapped.

Speaking about the refunds Mr Murphy told the Dáil: “The Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services recommended equal treatment between those who have paid their water charges to date and those who have not.”

“In keeping with the Government’s commitment to implement the committee’s recommendations, the Government will include a provision for refunds in forthcoming legislation, which it is intended to publish shortly.”

“Subject to the passage of this legislation, Irish Water will begin an information campaign to inform customers and the public on how the refunds process will work.”
