A beautiful remembrance ceremony was held in Glasgow yesterday, to remember Irish student Karen Buckley.

One thousand candles arranged in the shape of a Celtic cross were lit near the young woman’s home in the Scottish city.

Flowers, candles, cards and messages of condolence had also been laid out in Glasgow’s George’s Square earlier, and a piper played. A minute silence was later held in Karen’s memory.

Marian Buckley, Karen’s mother, hugged husband John as they read messages of sorrow and support for the family.

The man charged with Karen’s murder, 21-year-old Alexander Pacteau, has not entered any plea or made any declaration so far. He made a brief appearance in court yesterday, where the charge of murder was put to him, and was then remanded in custody.

He will appear in court again this week for a full hearing.
