Keeping Up Appearances: English school issues letter to parents asking them to stop wearing pyjamas on the school run

A primary school has in England become somewhat of a viral hit in recent days after it issued a letter to parents asking them to please stop wearing pyjamas whilst carrying out the school run.

The letter which has been shared on social media reads: “If we’re to raise standards it’s not too much to ask parents to have a wash and get dressed. “I have had loads of support from the community and people saying it’s about time something was done. I have had far more positive responses than negative.” “If I get the parents on board then we often get the children too and in order to get the best chances for the children we have to raise the bar with the parents.”

The letter which was written by Kate Chisholm, head teacher of Skerne Park Academy in Darlington, after she noticed more and more parents wearing pyjamas at the school gates, meetings and assemblies. Ms Chisholm told the BBC: “It just got to the point when I thought ‘enough’s enough’. “I’m not trying to tell people what to do with their lives, but I just think having a really good role model first thing in the morning, getting yourself up, getting yourself dressed, ready for business, out to school is a really good example to set.”

However the letter has seemingly caused backlash amongst some parents with many saying they should be able to dress as they wish and that their appearance has had no effect on their children’s school life.
