Kelly: “Extra tax revenue should be spent on water charge refunds, pay hikes and transport – as the people deserve something back”

The former Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly and Labour TD has questioned the government on what they plan on doing with the extra €900 in tax revenue.

Mr Kelly who is no stranger to controversy said he believes the money should be spent on water refunds, despite the fact he was a supporter of the much hated charges.

Mr Kelly also said the extra funds should be invested in transport improvements and public sector pay hikes.

Mr Kelly also claimed that Fine Gael should spread the recovery to those who are continuing to struggle, despite the repeated talk of an economic recovery.

Speaking in the Dáil Mr Kelly said: “There is room to help people. Given the flawed, highly political and legally unsound water commission report, you could provide refunds costing €140m, which would appease back-benchers.”

“You could put money into transport. You could give a commitment to address public sector pay,” he added, citing a series of issues which are continuing to cause Government serious difficulties.”

Before adding: “People in work today are looking at the cost of living in this country and need to be given something back”.
