It is expected the Taoiseach Enda Kenny will officially offer his resignation on Tuesday.
The news of Mr Kenny’s long awaited departure comes as the new Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar will become Taoiseach on Wednesday.
It is understood Mr Kenny will travel to Áras an Uachtaráin to meet President Michael D Higgins on Tuesday to officially hand over his resignation, he will then proceed to the Dáil where he will address TDs for the final time.
Following Mr Kenny’s resignation the Dáil will be then suspended until Wednesday morning, when the Ceann Comhairle will take nominations for his replacement.
