Large jellyfish spotted in popular summer resort in Co. Kerry

There have been reports that a large jellyfish was spotted on Banna beach in Co. Kerry yesterday.

The species, reportedly a Lion’s Mane -the largest recorded-, is usually found in colder, northern latitudes around the Arctic, northern Atlantic, and northern Pacific oceans, though sightings have also been reported across the Irish Sea and English Channel in the past.

The largest specimen ever caught had a bell with a diameter of 2.3 metres (7 ft 6 in) and tentacles 37.0 m (121.4 ft) long.

Though venomous, the sting is not usually fatal in a healthy individual, though medical attention is recommended after contact.
