The death toll of Sunday’s mass shooting in Las Vegas has risen to 59 dead and 527 injured.
64-year-old retired accountant Stephen Paddock unleashed a hail of bullets from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Park hotel in the city, firing at a crowd gathered for a music concert across the road.
Police believe that Paddock killed himself just before a SWAT team stormed the room. Authorities recovered 23 weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition from the location. A further cache of weaponry was found at Paddock’s home in Mesquite, Nevada, a small community sited about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
No clear motive has yet emerged for the act. Paddock was a retired accountant with no criminal history, and his brother confirmed that he had no known affiliations to any political or religious organisation.
