Latest poll shows the vast majority of Irish people believe those found guilty of drink driving should receive an automatic ban

According to a latest poll conducted by Claire Byrne Live, the vast majority of Irish people believe those who are caught drink driving should receive an automatic ban.

The poll which was compiled for the show over the past week, found that 59% of the Irish agreed that being found guilty of the offence should result in an on the spot disqualification, however surprisingly 30% of people said no it shouldn’t result in a complete ban, whilst a further 11% said they didn’t know.

The poll comes after the Transport Minister Shane Ross recently revealed that he and his department have drawn up a number of proposals to halt the number of fatalities on Irish roads.

It is believed Minister Ross wants to introduce stricter punishments for major offences including drink/drug driving and speeding. Mr Ross is also considering reducing speed limits in built up areas to eliminate pedestrian fatalities.
