“Leo’s border comments completely miss the point” – according to Sinn Fein

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has described Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s comments referring to an invisible border in Ireland as completely missing the point.

Responding to the Taoiseach’s comments in London today Teachta McDonald said any border on the island of Ireland will be disastrous for business and agriculture and called on Leo Varadkar to keep his earlier promise to argue for the North of Ireland to remain in the Single Market and the Customs Union.

Teachta McDonald said;

“Having talked tough on the issue of Brexit during the course of his leadership campaign Leo Varadkar was expected to argue the case for the North of Ireland to remain in the Single Market and the Customs Union when he met with Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May today.

“However, his public comments after the meeting are extremely disappointing.  His call for any land border in Ireland to be invisible completely misses the point.  Any border in Ireland, invisible or not, will be disastrous for our economy. Any border will have the most serious consequences for agriculture and small businesses.

“To claim otherwise is to live in cloud cuckoo land.

“Taoiseach Varadkar should have held firm on his earlier commitments and argued strongly against any border in Ireland.

“Today he has failed the first test of his diplomatic skill and in doing so has undermined efforts to protect Ireland North and South from the affects of Brexit.

“It is now vitally important that he does not repeat these comments at next week’s EU Council meeting.”
