A man sustained a bullet wound to his left leg after being shot by a masked assailant in Derry last night.

The incident took place in the Corrib Court area of Ballymagroarty, in the outskirts of the city, at around 11.40pm.

The assailant is described as being 6ft tall, wearing dark clothing as well as the face mask.

The victim was taken to hospital, but his injuries are not thought to be life – threatening.

Erin McGinley, the local Sinn Fein councilor, said that this latest attack resembles a similar shooting incident that happened in the same area last September, when a 17-year-old man was also shot in the legs. In both cases, the victims were called to the same area of Derry.

PSNI detectives are appealing for anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the time leading to the attack to contact the Strand Road station, or Crimestoppers.
