Cabin crew and passengers overpowered a man who threatened to open one of the plane’s doors during the flight. The man was restrained on the Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Belgrade after trying to open the emergency exit as the plane was cruising.
The man was kept restrained for the remainder of the flight after being tackled by a number of passengers, including members of a Serbian handball team. Serbian authorities arrested the Jordanian man with an American passport, when the plane reached Belgrade. The passenger threatened to bring the plane down to join Allah, according to reports.
“A passenger got up and tried to do something at the door, but was stopped by crew members and other passengers. The passenger was then restrained for the remainder of the flight in his seat and handed over to the authorities in Belgrade.” said Lufthansa spokesman Andreas Bartels.
The suspect is being held in pre-trial detention on the grounds of endangering public safety.
