Man who raped and brutally beat a 50 year old woman is given an 18 year prison sentence




A man who brutally raped and assaulted a woman aged in her 50s in Co Carlow last June, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

According to RTE News, 34-yr-old Anthony Cassidy from Co Carlow, was sentenced to a lengthy prison spell after he was found guilty on Monday.

The national broadcaster states Mr Cassidy was found guilty of the horrendous crime after the victim, who has not been named, suffered a permanent brain injury following the brutal attack.

RTE News reports the victim, who will need around the clock care, was assaulted and raped by Cassidy as she walked to a shop in the Tinryland in the early hours of June 25th 2017.

Cassidy who pleaded guilty to the crime, also dumped the woman’s unconscious body on the outskirts of the town following the horrific attack.

It is believed the woman who has no recollection of the attack, was left in the area for at least 12 hours before an owner of a premises in the area discovered her lying in front of his property.

Cassidy was later connected to the incidents after Gardai examined CCTV footage which showed his movements on the morning of the sickening attack.

DNA evidence which was later recovered by Gardai then confirmed his involvement in the crime.

Cassidy, who has 34 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to the crime and was given an 18 year sentence on Monday.
