Massive overspend at RTE as new figures show the national broadcaster spends over €3.6m on salaries for its top staff every year

The TV licence maybe about to increase in the coming months ahead and if todays findings about spending at RTE is anything to go by we may all know why the call for the much needed increase has come about.

According to newly obtained figures the national broadcaster reportedly spends on average €3.6 million every year on salaries for its top staff, despite an annual debt of €20 million.

The figures which were published by the Dublin Live website showed that in total 24 staff at the comapny which has its fair share of critics received annual salary ranging from €150,001 to €250,000.

It also showed that the company spent between €40,001 to €60,000 on salaries for a further 900 plus employees during the year 2015, whilst a further 495 staff recieved salaries ranging from €60,001 to €80,000.

Although the vast majority of staff at the broadcaster is at the higher end of the pay scale the company did reveal that 360 employees did earn between €0 to €40,000 in the same calendar year.

However those figures look somewhat mediocre given that a further 252 employees earned between €80,000 to €150,000 during 2015.

The news of the extravagant spending comes less than a few months after the national broadcaster reveal that it posted an annual loss of €19.7 million in 2016.

Meanwhile the high spending on top earners which is expected to amount to €6 million will more than likely anger the taxpayer as many have criticised the quality of the programming the broadcaster produces.
