McDonald: “Government has failed to tackle the current homelessness crisis by not using vacant houses to home thousands of struggling families”

The deputy leader of the Sinn Féin party Mary Lou McDonald has launched a scathing on the Government for failing to tackle the current homelessness crisis by not using vacant houses to home thousands of struggling families.

Ms McDonald who was speaking in the Dáil recently slammed the saying that Fine Gael has failed to address the issue by not making it priority despite the “crocodile tears” on the subject.

Ms McDonald said: “There are 189,000 vacant homes across the State, 40,000 of which are in Dublin.” “Where else in the world would we find that situation on the one hand and thousands of children in emergency accommodation on the other ?’’

Ms McDonald also said she believed that rent certainty, linked to the consumer price index, should be introduced to address the situation.
