Memorial masses have taken place across the country to remember road traffic victims

Memorial masses have taken place around the country today to mark World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

Up to 40,000 people have been killed on roads across the island of Ireland since records began, with almost 170 people  killed on roads in the Republic of Ireland this year alone.

23,948 people have died on roads in the Republic since records began in 1959 with 14,839 people killed in Northern Ireland since their records began in 1931.

Candles were lit at masses around the country to remember all victims.
