Met Eireann forecasts five days of severe weather, with gale force winds and freezing snowstorms across the country

The national forecaster is painting a pretty bleak picture about the weather in Ireland this week, as the next five days will bring climatic extremes not seen since the 1980s.

Daytime temperatures will barely rise above 2C, but it will feel much colder due to wind chill. After dark, the thermometer will sink to -7 and -10C in places.

Thursday and Friday will be the worst of the lot, with blizzard-like conditions across the country on both days.

The forecast for the weekend remains uncertain, but wintry conditions will be predominant.

The advice is to prepare now, while there’s still time.
