The Minister for Health, Simon Harris, has thrown his support and political capital behind two different group’s campaigning for abortion in Ireland.
The Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment and Women’s Council of Ireland which are both campaigning to end the constitutional protection of the right to life of unborn children, met with Minister Harris last Friday to discuss the referendum campaign.
The majority of the cabinet including Taoiseach Leo Varadkar now support the repeal of the Eighth amendment and the allowance of abortions of the unborn up until 12 weeks of gestation.
Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin has also abandoned his formerly pro-life views and disregarded the views of majority of his party in backing abortion legalization in Ireland
Fine Gael and Fianna Fail will allow members to campaign for or against repeal according to their personal views, while every other party with Dáil representation is either known or expected to campaign as whole for abortion liberalization.
