Minster Denis Naughten is intent on pushing ahead plans to link child benefit with school attendance. The programme for government stated:
“We will reform the monitoring of child benefit payments by amalgamating the two existing school attendance monitoring systems, currently run by the Department of Education and Tusla, to address poor attendance within some families.”

According to sources, Denis Naughten believes that he is in a strong position to gain enough support to the pass the motion. He thinks he’ll get enough support that will see child benefit linked to a child’s attendance in school. Naughten said that teachers and Fine Gael TDs have encouraged him to stick with the plan.
