More of it – Leo Varadkar ignores opposition and moves ahead with carbon tax

The Taoiseach is moving ahead with plans to impose a carbon tax on Irish homeowners already struggling with a myriad of taxes, particularly property tax.

Varadkar insists that the new tax is not meant to raise more revenue for the government but to “change behaviour”.

The alleged goal of the new tax is to reduce people’s energy consumption but after a backlash from voters the Taoiseach now says he is seeking a way to give money back to those who reduce energy usage.

The new tax comes despite the fact that there is already a carbon tax which is passed onto consumers through bills.

It is a highly unpopular move and the fact that the last two months of protests and riots in France were sparked because of a similar tax seems to be lost on the Taoiseach and government.
