Official figures released show that 710,400 people were granted refugree status in EU nations in 2016 with over 355,000 are for Syria alone.
The figure is said to be more than double the number of refugees that came in during 2015.
“The largest group of beneficiaries of protection status in the EU in 2016 remained citizens of Syria (405,600 persons, or 57% of the total number of persons granted protection status,” the bloc statistics claimed.
Iraqis were the second biggest group with 65,800, followed by Afghans with 61,800.
Germany took in 445,210, Sweden 69,350 and Italy third at 35,450.
