It has been confirmed that over £40m sterling’s (€50.5m) worth of cocaine has been discovered in the UK in a joint operation between Gardaí, the National Crime Agency and the Border Force.
It is understood that major haul of cocaine was seized at Portsmouth port, on the south coast of England, yesterday afternoon when a cargo vessel named the Star Stratos, was searched by police officers.
Police say that the drug was hidden in a shipment of bananas coming from Colombia they also say that they found approximately 300kg of the illicit drug in the containers.
Meanwhile Gardaí say a substantial part of the shipment was due to be shipped to the Republic Of Ireland, and the discovery represents “a major disruption” to an organised crime whithin Ireland.
This latest operation is the second joint project within the last three months, after the naval service seized the yacht Makayabella back in September.
