Motorists advised to be very vigilant as multiple crashes due to snow and ice have been reported

The north of the country and western counties fared worst so far in Storm Fionn.

Temperatures of -2c were reported last night with very heavy snowfall from Antrim down to Armagh leaving multiple roads impassible or extremely treacherous.

Council workers claim the inclement weather came up on them quicker than they expected and that the snow stuck rather than melting in the wet ground.

Many accidents have been reported with vehicles sliding across roads into ditches and several into on-coming traffic, albeit mostly small accidents.

Tragically however one man lost his life in a three car pileup on the M7 last evening.
